About a month ago finally a translation of the second part of the Sapkowski’s saga about the Witcher was published. The date of publication was delayed several times starting from year 2009, but eventually the book appeared in the Amazon store, first only as a pre-order and now both on the US and UK version of the store the book is available to buy.
The Time of Contempt continues the story of Geralt, Yennefer, and other characters known from the first tome of the saga, namely The Blood of Elves, and the collections of the Witcher short stories (“The Last Wish: Introducing the Witcher”). In this part of the saga we are able to get to know many intriguing individuals, such as some of the sorceresses or political figures strongly influencing the future events of the novel. In this tome the action speeds up, the mages’ gathering on a Thanedd Island turns into a coup, the war with the Nilfgaard breaks out and Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri are torn apart from one another and each forced to struggle to survive.
And here are the blurbs translated from the Polish version and the one on the cover of an English one:
“The gathering of the sorceresses and mages ends up in a bloody coup. The Nilfgaard Empire invades the Northern Kingdoms. Geralt , Ciri and Yennefer are separated by war and cast into a different directions. And who is the black knight with the wings of a bird of prey on his helmet?
It is a time of sword and axe, a time of a wolfish blizzard. A Time of Contempt.
And during the time of contempt the Rats are crawling out into the surface. The Rats who are attacking in a rat ways - quietly, traitorously and cruelly. The Rats love having fun and killing. Those are the marauders from the defeated armies, lost children, raped girls, villagers, whose houses were burnt and families killed. A strange medley created by war that preys on the war’s misfortune. The people, who’ve survived everything, lost everything and to whom the death is no longer scary. Dressed in a stolen jewels, united in poverty and trouble with only one feeling towards the strangers – contempt.”
“Geralt the Witcher has fought monsters and demons across the land, but even he may not be prepared for what is happening to his world. The kings and armies are maneuvering for position, each fearing invasion from across the river, each fearing their neighbours more. Intrigue, dissent and rebellion are on all sides.
The Elves and other non-humans are still suffering under decades of repression, and growing numbers join the commando units hidden deep in the forest, striking at will and then dissolving into the trees. The Magicians are fighting amongst themselves, some in the pay of the kings, some sympathetic to the elves.
And against this backdrop of fear and contempt Geralt and his lover Yennefer must protect Ciri, orphaned heir and sought by all sides. For the prophecy rests on her, and whether she lives or dies she has the power to save the world - or perhaps end it.”
“The Witcher returns in this sequel to Blood of Elves, in the series that inspired The Witcher video games.
Geralt is a witcher: guardian of the innocent; protector of those in need; a defender, in dark times, against some of the most frightening creatures of myth and legend. His task, now, is to protect Ciri. A child of prophecy, she will have the power to change the world for good or for ill -- but only if she lives to use it.
A coup threatens the Wizard's Guild.
War breaks out across the lands.
A serious injury leaves Geralt fighting for his life...
... and Ciri, in whose hands the world's fate rests, has vanished... “
Personally this is one of my favourite parts of the Witcher saga, it is written really well, there are many turns of action and I like the development of the story as well as the development of the characters. I strongly recommend reading it! J
Sapkowski’s The Time of Contempt is available not only on Amazon, but also in most of the bigger bookstores, both in the paper and digital edition. If by chance you are in Stockholm, it is also available in the main library
The translation of the third book of the series The Baptism of Fire will probably be published in February 2014. If the news is confirmed we will inform you about it in our journal.
Have a nice weekend,
